Is summer the best time to visit Charleston? Well… it might actually be the worst. The heat, the crowds, and even the risk of hurricanes can turn a dream trip into a stressful mess. I’ve lived here for years and helped thousands of families relocate, and I can tell you from experience that timing makes all the difference. If you want to experience Charleston at its best, here’s what you need to know.

Summer can ruin your trip. Charleston gets extremely hot in July and August. It’s not just warm; it’s uncomfortable, with temperatures over 100 degrees due to high humidity. Restaurants are packed, beaches are overcrowded, and hurricane season makes everything unpredictable. You might find yourself stuck inside or, worse, needing to evacuate.

Spring is the best time to visit. March through May is the sweet spot. The weather is mild, usually in the 70s and low 80s. Flowers are in full bloom, and popular events like the Spoleto Festival and Charleston Wine + Food Festival bring the city to life. It’s a great time to explore the area without dealing with heavy crowds or extreme heat.

Avoid the peak of summer. June, July, and August bring the worst conditions. It’s muggy, stormy, and packed with tourists. Many locals choose to stay indoors or leave town during this time. If you want a calm and enjoyable visit, summer is not ideal.

Fall is a hidden gem. From September to early November, Charleston shines. The weather is still pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. You can enjoy oyster roasts, beach sunsets, and cooler evenings without the summer chaos. I surf without a wetsuit until late October, and it’s my favorite time of year here.
